1.25 miles

I hadn't planned on running today but I wanted to practice taking cups of water and drinking on the run because I have never done it before. I ran .75 mile to warm up and then did 5 ~100m strides at 6:30ish pace while grabbing cups and trying to drink. I didn't end up taking in much fluid but at least I have some idea of how it is supposed to work. Hopefully I don't have to worry about drinking much during the half.

When running my half a week ago, there were 4 water stations. I took some water on the first 3, and each time I noticed that I lost contact to the runners around me while trying to drink from those damn cups. At the 4th station I refused; it wasn't a warm day anyway, and I was sick of playing catch-up yet again.

I am hoping that it will be cool enough that I won't have to worry about water at all. You wouldn't think that would be a problem with how cold the weather was here this winter =) But it sounds like we might be looking at close to 60 degrees at the start of the race with some sun as well. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the day brings.

To be honest, the main reason why I took water 3 times is simply because it was there. I'm pretty sure I would have been just fine without drinking anything during the race. I never drink during 13 mile training runs - the temperatures aren't exactly warm at 7am in Ireland, no matter what time of the year.

I drank a bottle of sports drink 5 minutes before the start of the race, which should have been sufficient to get me through the entire distance, especially since it was cool and overcast - in fact it even started raining at one stage.

This is all a bit beside the point; I wish I were a bit better at drinking from a cup, which is why I think it's good that you're practising it. But I definitely agree with the last sentence of your entry, you shouldn't have to worry much about drinking during a half.
